ANDES CALENDAR WOOL RUG / TAPESTRY by Luis Paucar
Every geometric icon in this tapestry, based upon the Inca
calendar, advises dates and seasons to plant and harvest. Luis
Paucar hand-weaves this piece with careful dedication following
the techniques instilled in him by his parents and grandparents
with a view to preserve Peru's legendary weaving traditions. A
work of resplendent artistry for the admirer of pre-Hispanic
astrology.
Luis Paucar upholds the refined artistry of the Ayacucho weave,
using a double pedaled loom. He dyes the wool in big cauldrons
over an open wood fire and uses natural dyes for the clear hues
and industrial ones for the darker hues. Paucar works according
to a predetermined sketch and once the piece is done it is
carefully finished by hand.
This piece is made of 95% wool and 5% cotton. Around 60% of the
dyes used are natural, the remaining 40% are synthetic.
