The
story of Moises Manotupac`s life is about a man and his fight
to express his artistic talent, despite the difficulties.
Moises, who defines himself as a creative man, was born in
Pisac, a town near Cuzco, famous for being a city of artisans.
Although his parents were related to agriculture, the social
environment and his curiosity were responsible for what he
calls his artistic “contagion”. In his early days of
school he discovered the ancient art of the production of
ceramic. However, being an artisan was not a well considered
activity at that time. Sometimes, he was even the target of
the schoolboys’ jokes. After finishing high school, when
Moises went to Lima, searching for new horizons, the situation
didn’t improve. “I was ashamed of that thing that I
do better”, he says. He tried many jobs, even stayed a year
in the army. He also worked in the industrial fabrication of
ceramic, a job where he had an opportunity to show some of his
abilities but in which he had a limitation to show his art and
was trapped in routine. Today, after a lot of effort and hard
work, Moises has his own workshop and he is happy. He is now
exploring a combination between contemporary and traditional
designs. “I don’t feel less any more”, he tells us. He
gives opportunity to other artisans from all over Peru. Thanks
to Moises, they have a chance to be proud of their art.
