Lucila Pedregal Ramirez knows the importance of family. She has two of them: one, make by her children and husband, the other one by a group of  colleagues and friends. Her job, the creation of arpilleras (cloth Patchwork) plays a big role in these relationships. First of all, it allows her to work at home and take care of her sons. She doesn’t have to leave them alone while working at a far away place. At the same time, she and other producers of this type of 3-D textiles have joined together in order to form a club, an association of communitarian work and mutual aid. This is a very important organization since it helps to increase efficiency and to defend each member from unreliable merchants.

The progress of Lucila has been enormous. Twenty years ago she got started in the production of Patchwork working for someone else. Now, she has a workshop in which five people work with her (even twenty can work there when there is a big demand). She can express her art through the arpilleras and has the independence required for doing this: the motifs that she uses in them are rural images, farm recollections from her youth, where she shows the shining and vivid colors of the Andes.

Lucila’s small company is called “Lucero del futuro”, Spanish for “Future’s morning star”. And her future is a shining one: with the Internet, she expects to expand her market, to arrive to more customers. “The important thing”, she says, “is to always have work”. We can add that art, talent and beauty will be always present on Lucila´s work.
