Churchill
said once the following: “Without tradition, art is a flock
of sheep without a shepherd. Without innovation, it is a
corpse”. Following the talented statesman’s metaphor we
can say that the art of César Yurivilca Román is both a
perfectly guided herd and a living body. His story combines
family legacy and respect for the past with creativity and
originality. And shows us a visionary author with the
marvelous gift of talent.

Yuri,
as his friends call him, was born in the town of San Pedro, in the province of
Tarma, in 1921. Due to the artistic heritage of his parents, Yuri started
his relationship with art very early in his life. When he was twelve years old,
he helped his family in small things; when he was eighteen, he was involved in
weaving and the production of blankets. The experience turned him into a
talented artist. However, the turning point of his life (the wonderful idea
that made him loved and respected) came to him later in his life, in the early
1960s.
Yuri
left his town and his weaving job. He dedicated to different things and even
opened a prosperous business. However, he distanced from his origins. Something
incredible was responsible for his reconciliation with tradition and his
encounter with innovation. One night, in his dreams, San Pedro (Saint Peter),
patron of his town, appeared to Yuri. It asked him to help his town. He
didn’t take seriously this request. A few days after, a landslide of mud and
rock ended with his business. He attributed his disgrace to his attitude
towards Saint Peter’s petition. Back in his town, poor and lacking resources,
he returned to the production of textiles. Searching for reconciliation with
the saint, Yuri tried to make a tapestry with his image. However, the ancestral
and traditional techniques that he knew from his infancy didn’t allow him
(they only permit geometrical forms). In order to solve the problem, he
invented a new technique: the Tapiz Relleno de San Pedro, Spanish for Saint
Peter’s filled tapestry, which allows the reproduction of figures.

The
innovation was a success. It consists of a network of thread that is then
filled with colored wool. He uses cotton textiles, alpaca wool colored with
extracts from natural plants. The new technique was adopted by San Pedro’s
weavers, which today show gratitude and respect for don César, the creator. It
was a blessing for the town since it created a bigger demand for the matchless
local tapestries. This form of producing textiles allows a greater visual
impact and a more detailed work. The wonderful idea is not the only
contribution of Yuri to his town: he has also constructed a local museum, named
“Yuri”, where he shows both his art and reproductions of universal artistic
representations. “It is a school both for the people of the town and the
tourists”, he says, while he shows a reproduction of a painting by Picasso,
one of his favorite artists.
Yuri
has won many prizes, in art fairs and exhibitions. Recently, the government
gave him a recognition medal and declared him a doctor in craftsmanship. He is
proud of his achievements: not only of the prices but also of the fact that he
has win the recognition of his town, and that he can give job to his family.
Now he wants to expand his market and to show his creativity to more people. He
thinks that the Internet is a good tool for achieving these objectives. Yuri,
the author, the creator is ready for this new challenge. And his unique and
beautiful tapestries, done in a technique which he invented, are now world wide
available.
